Early voting for the General Primary and Nonpartisan General Election, and election day is Tuesday, May 21! There are several critical races on this year’s ballot including the DeKalb County CEO, Board of Commissioners, Board of Education, judicial races, state legislative and Congressional races.
Georgia is an open primary state, meaning residents can choose which primary to vote in. Here is what you need to know:

Incorporated in 2016, Smoke Rise is a cozy residential community nestled within the City of Tucker along Hugh Howell Road. Considered one of the district’s “best kept secret” where one can go to rejuvenate, relax and enjoy, is Smoke Rise Country Club.
Founded in 1998 on land donated by Gene Cofer and his family, the club’s amenities, which include a renowned 18-hole golf course, eight tennis courts, a junior Olympic-size swimming facility, dining room, ballroom and boardroom, offer families and individuals the oasis and respite of a five-star resort. Offering an oasis to more than 300 members, Smoke Rise Country Club creates 20-30 jobs during the slow season and up to 50 jobs during the high season.
The new Café 1117 sports bar is due to open by the end of the month. Smoke Rise Country Club also benefits the community by partnering with nearby schools and supporting junior golf and tennis programs.

Commissioner Steve Bradshaw recently released the 2022-2023 District 4 Report. As Chair of the Finance, Audit and Budget Committee, Bradshaw hosted three informational meetings throughout District 4 to review DeKalb County’s proposed 2023 Budget. Over the past seven years, under his watchful eye, Commissioner Bradshaw has returned more than $474,900 to the general fund, which supports the county’s operations — $127,160 was returned between 2022-2023 alone.

Collard Green Cafe, currently located at 1880 Mountain Industrial Boulevard, is growing and will open in a new location in June!
Moving into the old Hardee’s location next to Stars and Strikes at 1727 Mountain Industrial Boulevard, the cafe will grow from 1,500 SF to 3,500 SF. In addition to its expanding space, Collard Green Cafe will also be expanding its seafood menu and adding a breakfast shift to its hours.
With higher visibility at this new location and a flourishing customer base, Collard Green Cafe promises to continue its excellent quality food with great service as it continues to grow and thrive.

DeKalb County resident, Chakira Johnson, holds a civil engineering degree from Georgia Tech and currently serves as the city engineer for the City of South Fulton. Recognized as one of the “50 Notable Women” by Engineering Georgia and a 2020 member of the Leadership DeKalb class, Johnson is dedicated not only to improving infrastructure but also fostering community development.
In her time at Georgia Tech, Johnson was among the minority of women in her civil engineering class, but she has witnessed a significant increase in female representation in the field since then. She believes that young women are attracted to civil engineering for its community-building aspect and opportunities to shape neighborhoods.
Chakira Johnson’s contributions have helped pave the way for more equitable opportunities for women in engineering and building communities.

Demetrius McCoy is a dynamic community leader, blending innovation with motivational speaking to advocate for his fellow citizens and inspire the next generation.
With a background spanning academia and community service, McCoy earned his Bachelor of Arts from Paine College in Augusta, Georgia and furthered his studies by completing a Master of Science degree at Brenau University and pursuing additional education in Pastoral Counseling at Argosy University. Professionally, McCoy serves as Chief of Staff to Commissioner Mereda Davis Johnson, representing over 150,000 residents in DeKalb County, while also leading as the Senior Pastor at Word of Life Christian Church.
Committed to public service, he deeply understands the importance of accountable and experienced leadership for the county’s 350,000 residents, striving to ensure safety, economic prosperity, and an excellent quality of life for all constituents. With a robust educational background, community involvement and practical experience, McCoy is dedicated to continuing DeKalb County’s progress.
