It’s been a rainy winter and spring, causing large puddle collections and water intrusion issues for many. The purpose of having a stormwater system is to ensure that rainwater buildup does not lead to the flooding of roadways and property, but eventually makes its way back to the State’s riverways and water supply systems.
The stormwater and drainage systems are all underground and out of sight, meaning they are generally out of mind. The DeKalb County system, which has not seen a rate increase in 19 years, is in severe need of repair and maintenance.
The DeKalb County Board of Commissioners has been holding meetings and town halls to discuss the pending rate increase along with the details and timeline of the stormwater system repairs. At the conclusion of the May ’22 Townhall, Richard Lemke of DeKalb County Public Works summarized that the rate increase would equate to about $0.13 a day.
DeKalb County is also proposing to increase the tipping fees it charges cities to dump trash in the County’s landfill, with the cost likely to be passed on to residents and business owners. The County’s sanitation department stated that it has not raised its fees in over a decade, and it has exhausted its reserves requiring additional funding to sustain operations. The DeKalb County Board of Commissioners approved the increase to commercial landfills for the sanitation department during its March 28, 2023 meeting but excluded cities and CIDs from this increase.
The City of Tucker voted in November 2022 to manage its own maintenance responsibilities, which will go into effect on July 1 of this year. The City’s millage rate is slated to increase from 0.848 mills to 2.284 mills as it takes over public works from DeKalb County.

The Salvation Army receives a multitude of financial donations each year, in addition to also receiving gifts and products of a physical nature that need to be sorted, organized and grouped for their various purposes and recipients. The TSA Warehouse in Tucker is THE place for the organization to facilitate these tasks.
This building is formally called The Angel Tree Warehouse, as this program of The Salvation Army, Angel Tree, is the PRIMARY effort initiated from the warehouse. Angel Tree is the TSA program where individuals, corporations and donors across Atlanta can “adopt” an underprivileged and underserved child or senior and provide for them the presents, clothing, books and toys they are requesting during the Christmas Season. This effort results in an immense outpouring of generosity — which in turn results in an immense need for space for employees and Salvation Army volunteers to collect, sort and organize the gifts that go out to these neighbors in need. The Angel Tree Warehouse is the epicenter of the distribution of tens of thousands of Christmas gifts each year.
Recently, TSA brought a large truckload of pallets of canned food and dry goods from the food warehouse to be organized for a Senior Adult Feeding Effort program. After assembling meals in TSA food bags last week, volunteers and staff loaded a Box Truck and delivered these to Senior living facilities across Atlanta.
TSA also receives a very large donation of socks from the Bombas Company each year, that get sorted and distributed to various facilities and locations from the Angel Tree Warehouse.
