Tom Moreland
TSCID was saddened to learn of Tom Moreland’s passing on July 24. The late Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) commissioner and Moreland Altobelli Associates civil engineering firm founder was a great friend and his impact on Georgia transportation was immeasurable.

Moreland Altobelli Associates, now Atlas, has been TSCID’s engineering and infrastructure consultants for many years. Tom Moreland will be sorely missed. Our thoughts are with his friends and family at this time.

Learn more about Tom Moreland in this Atlanta Journal-Constitution article.

Founded in 1963 by Atlanta native and decorated war veteran Joe Burton, the building specialty sales company has been in our district for 49 years!

Joe Burton Company is still thriving today thanks to the hard work and dedication of Joe Burton’s son and current president, Lewis Burton.

Chris Brand Award
Congratulations to Friends of Disabled Adults and Children (FODAC) CEO Chris Brand for being honored with the Servant’s Heart Award on Thursday, July 27, by the East Cobb Civitan Club.

FODAC is one of our district’s largest philanthropic organizations. Brand was recognized for his devotion of more than 20 years to improving the quality of life of individuals and families with disabilities along with two other finalists.

Located at 4900 Lewis Road, FODAC can almost literally be considered the heart of our district. Please visit their website to learn more about how to help provide funding for families in need with home medical equipment or become a sponsor of the September 23 FODAC Music Fest featuring Cracker.
Industry Spotlight on Retail
While our district has a diverse make up of industries including manufacturing, food distribution, bioscience/medical, construction and logistics, we also have a strong presence in the retail market.

Stores like Sam’s Club, Publix, Macy’s, Mud Pie, Georgia Furniture Mart, the FODAC thrift store and Car Stereo Plus provide nearly 1,000 jobs in our district.

We are proud to have so many successful businesses flourishing and contributing to the region’s economic development. Tucker Summit CID is an incredible place to do business!
Warehouse Rents
The warehousing industry is experiencing a boom, despite the supply chain downturn. Rent for industrial space reached a record $9.59 per square foot during the second quarter of this year, which is up 16% from 2022 and 50% from the early days of the pandemic.
The rise in rents while companies shift their office and leasing decisions is a result of warehousing operators forecasting for long-term prospects rather than short-term market decisions. Since our district is largely comprised of warehouse space, this is good news for us!
Commissioner Cochran-Johnson Award
Congratulations to DeKalb County District 7 Commissioner Lorraine Cochran-Johnson for being named Georgia Elected Official of the Year by the American Public Works Association!
Commissioner Cochran-Johnson has served as the Chair of Public Works and Infrastructure since 2020 where she has successfully overseen the allocation of over $1 million in water, sewer and infrastructure repairs in the County. She has also supported restructuring the infrastructure debt along with grant, loan and financing applications from the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority and Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act loans that have resulted in $90 million in combined debt savings.

DeKalb Non-Discrimination Ordinance
On July 11, DeKalb County Commissioners passed a non-discrimination ordinance that would enable them to suspend licenses and permits for any business that discriminates against customers within the County.

With the goal of “strengthening protections for vulnerable residents in unincorporated areas of the county,” any violations of the ordinance can result in a six-month suspension of a business license and/or permit. The non-discrimination ordinance states, “the practice of discrimination against any person on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, pregnancy, age, disability, genetic information, familial status, political affiliation, political opinion, sexual orientation, parental status, gender identity, marital status or protective hairstyle in places of public accommodations is contrary to the public welfare, health, safety and morals of the resident of DeKalb County.”

The City of Tucker council members passed a comparable ordinance in June. Regional leaders are working to make the City of Tucker and DeKalb County an inclusive place for all to do business.

The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) needs your input to support development of the long-range Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP). While the primary focus of the MTP is transportation, the plan’s overarching goal is to envision the future. This includes important related areas, such as housing, technology and the environment, which are key to understanding and planning for a vibrant metropolitan area.

This survey covers a lot of ground and will take about 15 minutes.
