Since the passing of SPLOST II in DeKalb County in 2023, District 1 roads will become a lot smoother over the next two years. Commissioner Robert Patrick recently reported that the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners received an update on the neighborhoods and upcoming roads to be resurfaced.
View the projected road resurfacing schedule here.
Commissioner Patrick also recently helped secure a total of $1.8 million in federal funding for two projects in his district and DeKalb County.
Patrick, whose district encompasses DeKalb’s northern portion, worked with U.S. Congressman Rep. Hank Johnson, D-DeKalb, to attain the federal funds.
“I’m proud to work with Congressman Johnson to gain federal funding for these important projects,” Patrick said. “Thanks to his work and that of many others, these funds will help improve the quality of life not just District 1 but for all of DeKalb County.”

April 12 was the 69th Anniversary of Jonas Salk’s announcement that the polio vaccine worked and was “safe, effective and potent.”
Since then, biotechnology has risen as an industry. Genetic and blood testing help diagnose and cure disorders, food testing eliminates harmful bacteria and promotes healthy procedures and preparation, and organic testing helps develop new products and medicines.
Thanks to Jonas Salk and his hard work, dedication and discoveries that the biotechnology companies in our district like Eurofins, Food Safety Net Services and National Blood Testing Cooperative are able to thrive.

Chakira Johnson received her civil engineering degree from Georgia Tech, where at the time (2001), in a class of 54, 17 graduates were women. While civil engineering is still a predominantly male-dominated field, more women are entering the industry. In 2021, there was a near 50/50 split between men and women in the civil engineering undergrad program.
Johnson feels that young female engineers are drawn to civil engineering because of the community building and literal designing of neighborhoods. She also credits the strong STEM programming now in place to engage and entice young women into the engineering field.
Thanks to women like Chakira Johnson, who have paved a way into the engineering industry, rising engineering stars face less of an uphill battle when entering the field. Her advice to young ladies interested in engineering is to become familiar with math and technology, work hard and advocate for yourself.
