Atlanta Helps Propel Port of Savannah to Record Growth

The 2020 COVID-19 shutdowns led to a sharp increase of e-commerce highlighting the strengths of Atlanta’s logistics industry and Georgia’s ports, with the Port of Savannah seeing a 4% increase in inbound container volume. Atlanta’s supply chain capabilities has been a prominent driving factor in the Port’s popularity.

“We fully recognize that one of the key reasons we’ve been so successful is because we’re the closest port to Atlanta,” Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) Executive Director Griff Lynch said.

With Tucker Summit Community Improvement District being THE district with the best accessibility for Atlanta’s thoroughfares and the greatest warehouse and industrial facilities in the metro area, we are happy to continue our part in keeping commerce flowing and the economy flourishing.

The Need for Childcare Support in TSCID

As our nation emerges from COVID restrictions, our Georgia economy is roaring back to life. But there’s a big problem that’s slowing down our recovery: Thousands of job openings are going unfilled because employers can’t find enough workers. Everywhere you go in metro Atlanta, we see “Help wanted” signs and increasingly we’re seeing notices of limited business hours because of staffing shortages.

As we all know, the move to virtual school and the long-term closure of a majority of daycare facilities forced many parents out of the workforce. Now that they’re ready to return to these open jobs, they’re finding childcare facilities that are operating below capacity due to a lack of workers.

With the lack of workers hurting businesses – and that in turn threatening the tax base – local governments should consider directing some stimulus dollars toward helping childcare centers hire more staff, perhaps by supplementing wages until the labor market stabilizes and returns to some sense of normalcy.

Read more from Emory Morsberger on the need for stimulus funding for childcare support as the economy continues to recover here.
